Salins-les-Bains lies at the foot of the Jura massif, about 60 kilometres south-west of Besançon. Salins adopted the name Salins-les-Bains in 1926, and the spa buildings were fully renovated in 1935. The municipality took ownership in 1955 as the salt industry declined.
