Thermes de Salins-les-Bains in the Jura
Salins-les-Bains lies at the foot of the Jura massif, about 60 kilometres south-west of Besançon. Its thermal establishment grew from the same saline-water setting that supported the town’s salt industry, giving the baths a history closely tied to local industry rather than a separate resort story.
Salt wells and spa history
Salt from the saline springs had been worked since the Middle Ages, but the Thermes de Salins were built only in the middle of the 19th century. They were initially supplied by water from the Puits de la Muire. The developing spa town later gained a casino in 1890 and a railway connection.
Salins adopted the name Salins-les-Bains in 1926, and the spa buildings were fully renovated in 1935. The municipality took ownership in 1955 as the salt industry declined. In 1994, the Puits des Cordeliers was drilled to supply the baths; the directory entry says the older well was then retained for the relaxation pool. These dated changes show how the establishment adapted after the town’s industrial salt production lost its former role.
Water and care described by the directory entry
The associated French page describes strongly sodium-chloride water containing potassium, magnesium and calcium. It groups prescribed care into gynaecology, childhood developmental conditions and rheumatology. The examples on that page include certain post-operative, inflammatory and menopausal gynaecological problems; enuresis and delayed growth in children; and a range of joint, tendon and post-traumatic conditions.
This list records the establishment’s stated clinical orientations. It is not evidence that thermal care will produce a particular result. The suitability of any cure, especially one involving a child or an existing medical condition, must be assessed by an appropriately qualified clinician and confirmed with the establishment.
At the time represented by the directory entry, the centre also listed a public relaxation area and additional water-based services. Their present scope and availability should be checked rather than assumed.
Planning a stay
The directory entry address is Thermes de Salins-les-Bains, Place des Alliés, 39110 Salins-les-Bains. The position about 60 kilometres south-west of Besançon is useful for regional orientation, but the page does not provide dependable current transport schedules.
Opening hours and prices were not supplied in usable form. Confirm the operating season, medical and booking requirements, available facilities, prices and access arrangements directly with the establishment before planning a visit.
