Museum of Salt and Béarnais Traditions in Salies-de-Béarn

The Musée du Sel et des Traditions Béarnaises occupies a 17th-century house on Rue des Puits Salants in Salies-de-Béarn. Its collections explain how a saline spring influenced local work, the growth of the town and, in the 19th century, the development of thermal spa activity.

A town shaped by salt

The museum traces salt working in the area back to the end of prehistory, with evidence of exploitation during the Bronze Age. It then follows the subject into the medieval period, when the Béarnais town took shape.
