Thermes de Saint-Gervais-les-Bains

Thermes de Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is a thermal establishment in the Mont Blanc area of Haute-Savoie. The establishment profile places it at Le Fayet, near Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, with Megève, Chamonix and the Italian border all close by. Water rising at Saint-Gervais is used for the site's thermal activity. Its mountain setting is closely tied to the identity of both the baths and their wellness facilities.

A history shaped by the mountain

The thermal springs were discovered in 1806. M. Gontard then developed baths at Saint-Gervais during a period of growing interest in thermal stays; available information indicates that as many as 600 bathers came in 1824.

The history also includes the disaster of 12 July 1892. A large mudflow destroyed the establishment after a pocket of water beneath the Tête Rousse glacier ruptured, and the directory entry records 200 deaths. Warning systems were subsequently installed to detect a possible recurrence. The baths were rebuilt and resumed their development.

The directory entry also records the creation of the establishment's own cosmetics range and a refurbishment completed in 2011. That project gave the thermal complex a more modern environment for its wellness activity.

Thermal programmes described by the directory entry

The directory entry associates the establishment's medically supervised programmes with dermatology, respiratory and ENT conditions, and rheumatology. Its detailed list mentions eczema, dermatitis, atopic skin conditions, psoriasis, burns, other skin disorders and post-cancer care. Weight-management and smoking-cessation programmes are also named. These categories describe the centre's scope in the directory entry; they are not a promise that thermal care will produce a particular medical result.

Mountain balneotherapy and other treatments intended for rest and wellbeing are described separately. This distinction matters: a medical thermal programme is not the same as a leisure visit. Anyone considering treatment should confirm the current programme, its intended participants and its suitability with the establishment and an appropriate healthcare professional.

Practical context

The directory entry gives an address in the thermal park at Le Fayet. It also includes opening times and contact details, but these can change and are not repeated here.
