Things to see in Foix
Foix sits at the foot of the Pyrenees, where a compact medieval centre gathers beneath the three towers of the Château des Comtes de Foix. One of France’s smallest departmental capitals, it combines streets shaped by its abbey and castle with views towards the Ariège valley and surrounding mountains.

Things to see in Calais
Calais occupies a strategic position facing England and the routes towards northern Europe. Centuries of conflict, cross-Channel contact and industrial development have left a city of civic monuments, coastal defences and museums devoted to lace and wartime history.

Things to see in Laval
Laval grew beside a crossing of the Mayenne, close to the historic regions of Normandy and Anjou. Founded in the eleventh century on the site of an earlier Roman ford, the town developed around its castle. The river, fortress and medieval streets still provide its clearest points of orientation.
Much of the older quarter survives around the Vieux-Château, with timber-framed houses, sections of wall, historic churches and the Pont-Vieux. Laval has also received the French Ministry of Culture’s Ville d’Art et d’Histoire designation in recognition of this heritage.
Things to see in La Roche-sur-Yon
La Roche-sur-Yon is shaped by a decision made in 1804. Napoleon transferred the administrative centre of the Vendée from Fontenay to the small settlement, intending to impose order after further unrest in the department. The ensuing building campaign created a new town of broad avenues and large open spaces designed to accommodate mounted troops.
This planned layout remains the framework for exploring the city. Place Napoléon forms its civic centre, while nineteenth-century public buildings, an earlier Renaissance house and later gardens show how La Roche-sur-Yon developed beyond its original Napoleonic plan.
What to see in Le Mans
Le Mans has two strong identities. Its historic centre preserves Roman defences, medieval religious buildings and close links with the Plantagenet dynasty, while the city’s name is also inseparable from endurance motor racing. The old quarter is compact enough to reveal several periods of this history within a relatively small area.
